Inlays/Onlays Edinburgh

Inlays or onlays can be used as an alternative to standard fillings or crowns in cases where there is moderate decay, mild fracturing and/or damage to the biting surface of a tooth. This is an area prone to damage due to the process of chewing.

  • Avoid Escalation

They can be made from a number of materials including composite, gold or porcelain. Porcelain is currently the most popular material for inlays/onlays as it is strong and can be used to match the natural colour of existing teeth. As they are customised they can be securely bonded to the surface of the tooth for added structural integrity.

Barnton Dental Spa uses inlays and onlays which are custom-made to achieve a natural colour and perfect fit.

Inlays

Inlays are similar to fillings and lie within the cusp tips of your teeth. They can be used to replace metal fillings that have become aged or damaged. They are designed and built to fit within the cavity before being fixed in place. Inlays protect against decay and are easier to clean, making them a great alternative to direct restoration.

Onlays

Onlays are used for situations in which considerable repair is required as they involve more reconstruction. They are used to cover one cusp or more and allow the original tooth to be preserved. By rescuing damaged teeth onlays have the advantage of helping to avoid the need for further, more extensive treatment.
